The 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off York Harbor, Maine and was described by John Ebel of the Weston Observatory at Boston College as a rare event, happening once every five years. According to the USGS, it was located more than eight miles beneath the surface. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center reported that there was no threat of a tsunami for New England. Although there are no active fault lines in our area, this is still a significant occurrence. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage in Massachusetts. In case of future earthquakes, remember to "drop, cover and hold on" for safety as advised by the agency. Will Boston experience any aftershocks? There will likely be some measured by seismic activity. As Ebel explains, aftershocks with magnitudes around 2.8-3 may be felt along the North Shore of Massachusetts and coastal areas of New Hampshire and Maine.
In the past year, an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale originating in New Jersey was experienced in some areas of Massachusetts.

On Monday, January 27, 2025, an earthquake shook the state of Maine. The seismograph at the Weston Observatory at Boston College recorded the event. Police and fire scanner audio from York County also captured the initial response. A dispatcher can be heard saying that they were receiving calls about an explosion in various locations throughout town. Other witnesses, including Nancy Begert at an OB/GYN office in Portland, also reported feeling the tremors. However, despite some minor impacts such as objects falling off a desk, there was no significant damage reported. In light of the situation, the Maine Emergency Management Agency requested that residents refrain from calling 911 unless there was a serious emergency.
Fortunately for me, this time it wasn't due to my neighbor's loud music.
