The story of Captain Joseph White involves a prosperous merchant who was discovered brutally beaten in his own bed.

According to Giovanni Alabiso, who is the owner and tour guide at Salem Historical Tours, the crime was driven by financial gain. He claims that the 82-year-old merchant was apparently singled out by covetous siblings who desired to obtain his will.

Joseph and Francis Knapp sought assistance from Richard Crowninshield in completing their task. Under the cover of night, while Captain White rested, Dick Crowninshield ascended to the second level and brutally bludgeoned him with a club, causing fatal damage to his skull.

The notorious trial that ensued from the murder was said to have influenced both Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and the popular game "Clue."

Whether it's the ruthless act or retribution for the money theft, the essence of Captain Joseph White is rumored to linger in the corridors of his previous residence. "It is believed that Captain White haunts the house, safeguarding any rumored treasure he may possess,"

As tourists snap photos of the vacant Gardner-Pingree House, some images capture shadowy figures (both male and female) peering out from the windows and standing on the landing. Their identities remain a mystery, as it is unknown who they could be. However, one thing is for sure - there is definitely some sort of supernatural presence within the house.
