The Doobie Brothers are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a third year of touring, and they're excited to share some new music as well. Co-founders Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston recently spoke with Billboard about their upcoming album, produced by John Shanks and featuring former member Michael McDonald. This will be the band's first album with McDonald since 1980's One Step Closer, and the first to include all three vocalists since 1975's Takin' It to the Streets. While discussing the possibility of a new album, Johnston explains that things tend to happen organically within the band, including the creation of new songs and albums throughout their years together.

Doobies On The Tour

The lone Doobie Brother to stay with the band for its entire 54-year career, Simmons shared the news with fans through a social media post. "It's very exciting," he tells Billboard. "During our upcoming tour, I thought it would be fitting to also record an album. I believe our fans will enjoy it." He chuckles and adds, "We're not sure if they'll actually enjoy it or give us a hard time about it." However, this is unlikely. McDonald's addition to the band after working with Steely Dan was one of their most successful eras. He helped during Johnston's burn-out and contributed hits such as "Takin' It to the Streets," "It Keeps You Runnin'," "You Belong to Me" (co-written with Carly Simon), and "Real Love." The triple-platinum album Minute By Minute in 1978 became their only No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year for their hit song "What a Fool Believes."

One standout on the album is the gospel-infused track called "Walk This Road." Notably, it features lead vocals from both McDonald and Johnston, as well as a guest appearance by Mavis Staples. Simmons admits that he was caught off guard by Staples' contribution, as he had no prior knowledge of her involvement in the song. He initially thought it was Johnston singing, but quickly realized it was Staples with her distinct vocal quality. The trio's combined vocals left a lasting impression on Simmons. However, there are many other fantastic tracks on the record that he personally enjoys. Similarly, Johnston acknowledges that this album showcases a more diverse range of styles due to McDonald's involvement in all the songs. Despite this shift, he believes it is still an extension of what they do live.

According to Simmons, the ongoing Doobies reunion has been a truly enjoyable experience. The band is still going strong after 50 years, and though they stick to their tried-and-true methods, having Mike back in the mix adds even more to the mix. With a team of talented musicians and writers, coupled with our incredible band, we continue to impress and maintain our strength as a group.
